The old Father’s Day cliché goes something like this: Dad sleeps in, receives another pair of socks, and spends most of the day on the couch. This has never been the case with my dad, and I don’t know many dads who wouldn’t love to get out of the house and do something special for the holiday.
Based on past Father’s Days with my dad, I’ve put together a list of four exciting ways to spend this Father’s Day along with gift ideas to make the day just right.
Take your dad to a show.
Treat Pops to a night of culture at a play, art exhibit or dance performance. Whether it’s a big, renowned performance or a small local show, it’s fun to make a big deal of the event. Take him to his favorite restaurant ahead of time, and then grab a drink afterward. Ask him about the show and learn a little more about Dad. If it’s a dressy event, enhance his outfit with these Link Up Mustache Cuff Links and Paul Smith ‘Vintage Floral’ Silk Tie from Nordstrom (NW Court).
Hit the water.
It’s warm, and the outdoors are calling. Head to the nearest lake (and if you’re near Mall of America®, the nearest lake is never far away). A day on a boat, in a kayak or canoe, or on a paddle board is perfect for Father’s Day. L.L.Bean (Level 1, South) has the complete BIC Sport Ace-Tec Performer Paddle Board Package if your dad is ready to upgrade his water sport equipment. This classic American outfitter also has kayaks and a variety of outdoor equipment and classes to get you and Pops outside.
Or just relax on the water.
If you think your father is looking for something a little more laid-back, maybe a calm day of fishing is just the ticket. Pack a lunch and a couple of drinks and spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and taking it easy. Leave prepared with the Wild and Wolf Hook, Line & Sinker Fishing Tool from Nordstrom and a pair of Carrera Speedway Aviator Sunglasses from Solstice Sunglasses (Level 1, West).
Indulge his inner audiophile.
Maybe your dad’s favorite band is rolling through town on one last glorious reunion tour, or perhaps it’s time to introduce him to something a little newer and fresher. Nothing tops live music, and it’s an especially fun time with Dad. Surprise him with a pair of LSTN Encore Ebony Wood Headphones from Nordstrom so he can listen to the set list again and again.
However you celebrate, the most important thing is to let your dad know he’s special. How you express that is up to you!
