Every summer at our family cabin my cousins and I used to squeeze lemon juice in our hair and ask Grandma to give us French braids. We’d play at the lake for hours hoping the sun and the lemon juice would highlight our hair and our braids would keep us cool. With summer right around the corner I wanted to recreate this look and see what the professional could do with this inspiration.
I went to Progressions Salon at Mall of America® and worked with Professional Hair Stylist, Angela. I told Angela my story and showed her a few pictures before asking her to recreate, with her professional skills and resources, the style I tried creating on my own every summer at the lake.
Starting with the color, Angela used a balayage technique that, similar to squeezing lemon juice in your hair, creates a natural sun-kissed look. She focused on face framing highlights by painting on the color with my head tilted back like I had been laying out in the sun.
After the color we started on the style. The inspiration was a classic French braid (I always asked for pig tails), but we went with a modern high fashion braided faux hawk. Angela created this look using a loop braiding technique that started at the top of my head and went down the middle. At first, she made the braid tight to build the structure of the faux hawk, then she went back through the braid pulling it loose to add the volume and fun texture that created this look.
My sun-kissed, high fashion, braided faux hawk surpassed all my expectations. I couldn’t have asked for a better recreation of my favorite classic summer style. Thank you to Angela at Progressions Salon for the amazing experience and I hope you like it too, Grandma.
